We often write you at critical times, pivotal moments when we have to clearly announce who we want to be and what we stand for. Although there should be no choice here, we again find ourselves at such a moment. There are not multiple sides, there is no nuance, there is no question. What we witnessed in Charlottesville was hatred, racism, and the worst that America can be. The only choice now is to reject that hatred and racism and to work to transform America into the best we can be.
The Nazis, Klan members and other white supremacists who gathered in Charlottesville were armed to the teeth. It is by sheer luck and the grace of God that we are not mourning more than the terrible deaths of Heather Heyer, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke MM Bates.
We cannot dismiss what happened in Charlottesville as fringe or unusual. We must face it head on and acknowledge that racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and all the other antis and phobias are part of America. And then we must commit to fight that all and to disarm hate. There is no other choice, there is no other side.
