In the aftermath of the Isla Vista shootings, much has been said about the gun issue and various proposals meant to combat gun violence. But what really might have stopped Elliot Rodger is a mental health evaluation at his family’s request, including a suggested “gun violence restraining order.”

“Family members often know better than anyone when someone’s mental state is deteriorating, so their concerns deserve to be taken more seriously than a potential psychopath’s glib denials. In many but not all states, family members and others can ask a judge to have someone’s mental health evaluated,” writes USA Today‘s Editorial Board.
