Yesterday at about 3:30pm Aaron Ybarra, aged 26, opened fire at Seattle Pacific University.  The shooting left one dead and three injured.  When the suspect stopped to reload his shotgun he was pepper-sprayed, tackled, and put in a headlock by a student building monitor.  Several other people then held the suspect down until police arrived.

Ybarra opened fire on in the foyer of Otto Miller Hall, which houses SPU’s math, science, and engineering departments.  After he was subdued Ybarra was taken into custody, questioned by police, and booked into county jail.

A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital and a 20-year-old woman in critical condition was taken into surgery Thursday night.  A 24-year-old man was treated for gunshot wounds and a 22-year-old man was treated for other unspecified injuries.  Both men were listed in satisfactory condition.

SPU, which has a student body of around 4,200, remained on lockdown for about 90 minutes following the shooting.

Our hearts go out to victims, their families, and the entire SPU community.
