A letter to the editor published in The Morning Call expresses outrage and disgust at what Act 192 threatens to do to Pennsylvania communities. The new law allows outside gun groups to sue townships and cities over local gun ordinances, and holds the defendants fiscally responsible. The plaintiffs, meanwhile, have no such liability. Furthermore, Act 192’s passage is just plain irresponsible, considering how much harm gun violence has done to Pennsylvanians.
“From 2001 through 2010, Pennsylvania had the fourth most gun deaths of all 50 states, and in 2010 had the fifth highest rate of gun homicides among children and teens, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” writes Bethlehem resident Barbara Diamond. “Given this toll from gun violence, our lawmakers should be supporting common-sense gun laws, like bans on carrying weapons in the parks where our children play, not dismantling them. Shame on them.”
