Kentucky representative Thomas Massie wants to make Washington D.C. one of the most gun friendly cities in the nation.  The amendment he has sponsored would not only allow for the private sale of handguns without background checks, but would also allow for open and concealed carry on the streets of the nation’s capitol.  The amendment would also allow people to purchase firearms without a waiting period and allow for an unlimited amount of bullets in magazine and the possession of assault weapons.  In response to media inquires about the bill, Representative Massie stated that he wants to “’restore gun rights anywhere I can.’”  However, Representative Massie, like many members of Congress seems to want “two sets of rules- one of for themselves and one for us,” in regard to gun laws.  The hypocrisy was best demonstrated just last Friday, when metal detectors thwarted press secretary Ryan Shucard, who works for Representative Tom Marino, from carrying a nine mm handgun into the Cannon House Office Building.  Charged with carrying a pistol without a license, Shucard now faces up to five years in prison if convicted.  As D.C. Shadow Sen. Paul Strauss aptly summarized, “Congress likes to talk about loosening gun laws, but when it comes to their own work places, they’re not seriously going to do it.”
