In an editorial today (click here to read), the Philadelphia Inquirer highlighted the need for common ground as it pertains to laws governing firearms — and particularly firearms purchases — in Pennsylvania.

The law in PA, as it is currently written, requires a background check for any purchase of a handgun but does not require a background check in order to privately purchase long guns. Long guns have been the weapon of choice for many mass public shootings in the recent and distant past and should be subject to the same regulations as sales of handguns.

Unless common ground is reached and background checks become mandatory for the private sale of long guns, Pennsylvanians will continue to be unnecessarily at risk.
