On Monday, police chiefs across the country called for universal background checks for gun sales. According to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago, the proliferation of guns is one factor responsible for a rise in homicide rates this year in many U.S. cities.

Referring to the need for universal background checks, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said, “This is a no-brainer, this is the simplest thing in the world. It troubles me all the time.”
