We all know Cookie Monster’s famous theme song “C is for Cookie, that’s good enough for me!”
But C is also for crummy, complacent, culpable and criminal — those are the words that come to mind when we saw that Pennsylvania again got a C from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
We get the C because we have background checks for the private sale of handguns. But we’re still fighting to expand that to cover the private sale of long guns — something we can and should do.
The other factor that moves us up to a C is PICS, the PA Background Check System. But as we well know, the gun lobby and their friends in Harrisburg keep trying to eliminate PICS. So, we have to fight to keep one of the only bright spots in PA’s existing regulatory system.
We can’t be proud of a C when we’ve done so little to deserve even that grade: remember in PA, there’s no license or registration to purchase or possess firearms, there’s no waiting period, there’s no limit on how many guns you can buy, there’s virtually no regulation of ammunition, and there’s no requirement to report lost or stolen guns.
A C is not good enough. But C is also for Can do better!
For all who celebrate, have a Merry Christmas. And we hope everyone has a happy and peaceful New Year!
